Residential painters quote per square foot of body wall + linear foot of trim. The only thing between an address and a real quote is measuring the house. Done manually, that's a 30-minute drive plus 20 minutes with a tape measure plus story-height assumptions plus trim counting — all before you've talked price. Done with Paint Launch: about 30 seconds, free.
How instant paint measurement works
When the Render Agent generates an AI render of a repainted home, it simultaneously pulls measurements from a stack of data sources:
- Google Solar API provides the building footprint perimeter and individual roof facet positions — which tells you the linear feet of wall on each side of the house.
- Street View image analysis infers story count (1, 1.5, 2, or 2-with-walkout-basement) from the visible front elevation.
- Standard wall-height assumptions (8 ft for 1-story, 18 ft for 2-story, 24 ft for 2-with-attic) convert footprint perimeter to wall surface area.
- Window detection (from the rendered photo) approximates trim linear feet around openings.
The output is six numbers attached to every render: body wall sq ft, trim linear feet, soffit area, gable area, story count, and number of distinct surfaces (front, sides, rear). These feed directly into the customer portal's pricing tier — the homeowner sees their material-tier price the moment they scan the postcard.
Why this changes the unit economics
Without instant measurement, the contractor workflow looks like this: render the address → drive to property → measure walls + trim → manually estimate gallons + labor → send quote → wait. Each step adds friction and drops conversion, and the cost-to-quote a cold lead is high enough that mailing 200 addresses isn't economic.
With instant measurement, the workflow collapses: render the street → press send. Homeowners get postcards showing their repainted home + material-tier prices, scan, see their personalized customer portal with a color picker, and pay a refundable color-lock deposit. Zero contractor time on tire-kickers; homeowners self-qualify.
The math compounds. Paint Launch contractors average $32 in install revenue for every $1 spent on mailed paint quotes, partly because the cost-to-quote a single lead is so low that mailing 200 homes at $1 each is rational.
Accuracy and when to verify on-site
For typical single-family homes (rectangular or simple-L footprints, 1–2 stories), the auto-measurement is within 8–12% of a hand-measured number — accurate enough to quote off and collect a color-lock deposit. The contractor should still verify on-site before ordering material for three reasons:
- Detailed trim around bay windows, decorative shutters, multiple gables.
- Soffit and fascia condition (does anything need carpentry repair before paint?).
- Body color absorbance — a deep navy on a previously cream-colored body needs more coats than the auto-estimator assumes.
The auto-measurement collapses cold-address-to-deposit-paid; the site visit collapses deposit-paid to scheduled install.
How auto-pricing uses the measurement
In Paint Launch, the contractor sets per-square-foot pricing for each material tier in their account — typically standard exterior (Sherwin-Williams SuperPaint), upgraded (Duration or Aura), and premium (Emerald or Aura with primer). From that point on, every rendered home auto-generates three tier prices:
- Standard exterior = body sq ft × standard rate + trim linear ft × trim rate
- Upgraded = body sq ft × upgraded rate + trim linear ft × upgraded trim rate
- Premium = body sq ft × premium rate + accessory upgrades (carpentry, primer, etc)
All three tier prices appear on the homeowner's customer portal, anchored to the rendered photo of their house in each color combo. The homeowner picks the tier they're comfortable with and pays a color-lock deposit on the spot.
See the exterior painting pricing guide for typical per-sq-ft ranges by region and material tier.
What this replaces
- Tape-measure site visits. A 20-30 minute on-site task that doesn't scale to mailed-quote volumes.
- PaintScout / Markate / Estimate Rocket subscriptions. Useful for production estimating; expensive for prospecting at scale.
- Homeowner-reported square footage. Usually missing or wrong. Paint Launch surfaces a real wall-sq-ft number before the contractor is contacted.
- Eyeballed quotes from Street View. Fast but inconsistent across estimators.
